Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4 in 1972. Jill Scott was raised by both her mother and grandmother. The only child she has. Scott graduated from her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two different jobs. She planned on becoming a teacher of English at a secondary school. This dream however, was in vain when she left school after three years of studies and was an aide to teachers. Her first job was as a spoken word artist who performed her own works at live poetry readings and eventually linked up with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate as well as co-writing You Got Me. During Roots' show, she revealed herself to be an artist. Then, she began working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained performance experience in the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was signed by the label's first artist.
